From Paperless Office

A large percentage of the effort expended by the human race is to use dead dinosaurs to move around dead trees. We use fossil fuels to move around pieces of paper. In the United States, the average person consumes nearly 750 pounds of paper every year. The technology exists to do away with these antiquated processes. This site is designed as a resource for people who want to spend less time and natural resources moving papers around.

[edit] Paperless vs. Paperfree

Obviously the ideal state is for all business to be conducted in a paperfree environment. Obviously such a change isn't something that will happen overnight. Instead of trying to change the world all at once, www.paperless-office.org is focused on how individuals can have less paper in their lives with a particular focus on helping create offices that use digital technology to reduce the amount of paper required.

Paper will be in common use for as long as any of us are alive. However, we can do our part to cut down on the amount of paper being used and invest in understanding the digital technologies that can save both paper and time.

[edit] Paperless Office

The key idea behind a paperless office is to create an environment where paper is not used as a way to store information. Since we can't change everyone on the outside, there is still paper coming in and occasionally paper going out, but the key is to create an office where information storage is done in bits instead of ink and toner. Once the storage mechanism is digital, it becomes much easier to design other processes around reducing the amount of paper that needs to be brought in or sent out.
